Temitope Adeshina smashed the long-standing High Jump National Record set by Doreen Amata in 2008 at the Corky Classic in Texas, clearing an impressive height of 1.96m, in only her second NCAA meet at the weekend.
The 25-year-old Nigerian, who joined the Texas Tech School athletics team in 2023, surpassed Amata’s 1.93m indoor and 1.95m outdoor records by successfully clearing 1.96m at the Corky Classic in Texas, USA.
Starting her day with a jump of 1.85m, she continued to excel with jumps of 1.88m and 1.96m, ultimately achieving the historic leap.
Chief Tonobok Okowa, the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria, commended Adeshina’s performance, emphasising her potential to become a world-class athlete.
He said, “It’s a heartwarming performance by Adeshina, it’s a world-leading performance, and I am counting on her to improve on that record. It’s a sign of good things to come as we prepare for the African Games and the Olympics this year.”
