Nigerian home-based athletes are in for a contest today in Kaduna as the Athletics Federation of Nigeria Golden League series begin.
The competition started with the all comers meet yesterday, with athletes who met the Golden League standard moving up to the N1m jackpot event that will spread over six legs.
“The Golden League is a novel idea we are introducing to keep our athletes busy all season.Apart from the N1m jackpot, there are smaller prizes for the winners in all the legs.
We are just hoping that the athletes will live up to expectation and return good times,” said AFN boss Solomon Ogba.
He said that the meet will be an avenue for the Commonwealth Games campers to display their prowess and prove that it was time wasted at the Gateway Stadium in Ijebu-Ode.After the Kaduna leg, the meet will move to Ilaro in Ogun State.
The Ogun State government is said to have pledged N7m to help the AFN organize the meet.Warri will be hosting another leg of the Golden League with the Delta State government bank-rolling the competition.
Owerri will be the next port of call with Addax Petroleum supporting, while the last leg will be decided in Lagos even as the AFN is expecting the Lagos State government to throw in some funds.
